BioThe Order thinks that Snape is spying on the Death Eaters for them, and the Death Eaters know that Snape is supposedly spying on them for the Order, but believe that he is spying on them back, and it's all just a big circle of spying. He's like James Bond, only not as lucky with women. It's quite complicated, really, and I don't think anyone knows quite how to act around him, since most people just act rude.
He's also the new Potions Master at Hogwarts. He took over after Slughorn "retired."
